HAPPY TIMES in Tokyo with Wen Nov 8 - 15, 2009

This year's vacation was taken with Wen, my 16 year old son who had just completed his exams. In my 'younger' days, I had told myself I wld never be able to see a part of Japan because it is such an expensive place to go but here we are in Tokyo for 8 whole days! .. and yes Tokyo is expensive but is affordable :) Politeness, cleanliness, first-class service and all things beautiful. Any item you buy is carefully wrapped in beautiful packaging and presented to you with utmost gratitude. That is Japan! Please enjoy the photos ..

We stayed in Shinawaga, one of the 24 wards within Tokyo, which is our base and from there took day trips out to the various wards, with the exception of one night where we headed out to Hakone, south east of Tokyo, for the onsen (hotspring) experience.

TOKYO
Our first stop .. Harajuku. I was told this is where the Harajuku girls hang out but there was just a handful when we were there. Nonetheless we enjoyed our walk in Yoyogi Park and some road stall 12inch sausage :)

Hakone is a part of the Fuji Hakone National Park and the whole area is interconnected with the train, cablecar, ropeway, cruise ship and buses. We bought a JPY5000 pass (each person) which allows us to hop on any of these mode of transportation. We spent two days and a night there and the hotel where we stayed had a natural onsen which I enjoyed very much .. but I think not so for my son. He tells me he is not used to see older naked men .. lol. We were to see Mount Fuji .. but unfortunately visibility was so poor, we missed it completely. A good reason to return .. huh?

This is the town of Hakone-Yumoto where the train terminal is. This is a tourist place so there are a lot shops and restaurants and of course hotels. It is just so nice to walk up this street lined up with so many attractions.

On our second day, we decided to re-do the circuit again but unfortunately it rained ..

The wind was so strong, swaying our car over a 300 feet over the foggy volcanic valley. It was quite scary.

and our stopover at the Owakudani Station was an experience to be remembered. Wen insisted on going out to experience the high winds .. I was so afraid he would be blown away.

Our trip to Hakone was disappointing as the rain did not permit us to do the walks we so wanted and of course, we did not get to see Mount Fuji.

Back to Shinagawa .. next day visit to Tjukiji Wholesale Fish Market, Japan's central wholesale market. Out of the Tokyo train station, just follow the fish smell and you won't go wrong. We went not really for the smell but we read that the sushi is really fresh and they were right !

After Tjukiji, we proceeded to Asakusa, to see the 'old' Tokyo. This is Kaminarimon Gate, entrance to the Sensoji Temple, the main attraction of Asakusa.

There are many visitors including the Japanese themselves and there are always the ever-ready tourist guides .. Never got to know his name but he is so charming and spoke impeccable English that we decided we needed a guide :)

There were many tourists in the main hall of the temple, including westerners; some taking photos, some making wishes for a better life ?? More reading on this very popular tourist destination .. Sensoji Temple, Tokyo's oldest temple. For more majestic splendor of the Sensoji, click here.

In every temple, a common sight is an area of water tank where visitors purify themselves by washing their hands (do no evil) and rinsing their mouth (speak no evil) BUT caution this water is not fit for drinking :)

Bonsai exhibition .. this is the first time I have seen flowering bonsai plants.. so pretty.

I think this is the highlight of the visit . . a 800m walk of shops, shops, shops of souvenirs, titbits, icecream, and all things Made in Japan !

We spent the rest of the whole day here .. lots of see, eat and enjoy.

Next .. off to Yokohama, Japan's second largest city, next to Tokyo (so i just found out :) and probably the largest port in Japan?

A walk in Yamashita Park .. it was much colder and very windy here.

More walking the next day .. to Kawagoe. I am so glad I found out abt this charming old town of 'past centuries'. Walking down Kurazukuri Street, you will find many little temples and shrines, just off the streets.

You can't help but feel the quiet and tranquility of each of these temples.

Everything is so neat and all in its right places.

There are lots more we saw at Kawagoe. Lunch at one of the restaurants was so yummy and home-cooked. We enjoyed the hospitality of the owners of the restaurant. You can't miss the candy lane of Kashiya Yokocho too.

Our next destination was Shinjuku where all the main shopping belt of Tokyo. By then I felt I walked 100km :)

Even though, we did not speak Japanese, it was still fairly easy to get around. At every train station (which by the way is the way to move around), there is always a tourist information station manned by guides who are more than helpful esp. to foreigners. I can see that if there is a test to be taken for 'knowing how to use the trains', I will pass this test .. and above average :) You just have to understand the system, do it several times over and you will get used to it. Be prepared though, that Tokyo is not really for the faint-hearted. There are lots and lots of people around all day long. It can be quite stressful but still you will manage because the Japanese are just sooo polite. There is rush BUT there is no push and that makes a lot of difference.

I hope you enjoyed reading this little vacation with my son. I hope to make another trip to Japan but this time to Hokkaido .. let's see :)

Taking A Short Vacation

It's been a while since I took a break .. well it's going to happen! I will be off to Tokyo this Saturday and will be spending a week there. And what is a holiday in Japan without ONSEN (hot spring) so i have included an overnight stay in Hakone, the nearest hot spring mountain resort in Tokyo. If I am lucky, I will have a full view of Mt. Fuji ! I am so looking forward to soaking up the hustle and bustle of Tokyo as a tourist :) and spending a 2 relaxing day at Hakone.

Please keep all those emails coming and if I cant get back to you immediately, you can be sure I will answer your emails upon my return on November 15.

MY BIKING BUDDIES ..

I had a fine time with my friend, Stefan, on our cycling trip from ECP F2 Carpark to Changi Village PCN (Park Connector Network). That's my DAHON behind Stefan. It was 34km two-way trip. Stefan is a visiting student from Germany. He has since returned to Stuttgart and I have to say i kind of miss him. I enjoyed his company very much and I hope our path will cross again :)

.. and here is HJ. HJ is from Korea. Well who says you dont look good with a helmet? We did the same route It started out with a nice balmy morning but by the time we could reach Changi Village, it rained cats and dogs! .. two ladies braving the rain. We were soaked to the skin! After brunch at Changi Village, we thought it had rained out .. boy were we wrong ! I thought it was fun riding in the heavy rain but not HJ... she thinks I am crazy ! Should have snapped some photos but we were too busy with getting home to change out !

.. and this is me !

HJ promised that she would do this ride with me again and i am looking forward :)

I got my beautiful Aigner watch.. compliments of Amex!! YAY !!

I have always had watches with a small round face and this is a pleasant change .. a large rectangular face which allows for easy reading of the time and it comes with a date as well. All these i simply love. i love the high-polish wide band and the slimness of the case.The clasp snaps so easily to close and also releases securely when removing. Such a well made piece.

The best part is that I did NOT have to pay a cent ! It came as an American Express credit card promotion .. just simply spend SGD5000 .. no time limit and the watch is yours! Needless to say.. i was just charging on my Amex the last few months.

my first DAHON!

For a change.. this is not about my work .. it's personal. I have always wanted to get a bike. Okay I have to admit I am a novice when it comes to biking so i really need a bike which will allow me to start somewhere and yet look COOOL ! .. AND not forgetting one that i could move around easily so that i can bring it to a ride in a park. So you can imagine i made quite some research and finally i found it !! .. a foldable DAHON !

Here it is.. all mine and to be exact it's the MUP8. I love the 'feline spine'. Nice ??

I am truly impressed by its design and compactness when all folded up in 11secs! Okay i took 20 but i will get there!

I took it out to the jogging path along Ulu Pandan Canal early this morning for my maiden ride ..... and sustained my first tumble.. yes it was quite a tumble but i am okay. My impression .. well not just mine but I also impressed many other riders and joggers who were wondering what this beauty is all about and if you are also wondering here is the website:

I just got the prettiest 8mm OMC in lightest pink color and I am sure the lady who ordered this stone will be very happy when she gets it. Here is how I would describe it... very mild pink, almost transparent and quite like the very light pink diamonds

I have been commissioned by M and B to work on their e-ring. It's going to be a classic 3-stone ring with the Asscher as the main stone.

I just love these sunlight pictures .. how the stone sparkles each time the light hits the stone.

The sides are clear Step Cut Trapezoids ..

The order is being processed and i can't wait for the metalwork. I hope to work with both M and B a matching band.

Jan has been one of my earliest customers. I have to dearly thank her for 'taking the plunge'; with me being so far away in Singapore, and she being in USA. Jan's first project with me was the JAN RING (named after her, of course :) This is the first JAN RING with many that followed thereafter ..

ONE VERY SPECIAL PROJECT COMIN' UP !

I am so happy to be working on this project .. it will indeed be a very special one. R had worked with me before on many, many pieces and now she has commissioned to do up an antique e-ring with a 'french' touch :) She tells me the 'french' touch holds a lot of meaning for her. There will be lots of milgrain, with blue sapphires side and of course diamond melees and a BIG Krupp-inspired Asscher cut of a ~6 carat size! I have taken some pictures of the stones and perhaps you can have a some ideas on the project. I am hoping to get the metalwork soon and already R has been lining up some other exciting new projects in the pipeline... Yay!

Do Stones Speak???

Recently I got some large pieces of the Pear, Oval and Marquise cut, just to show how pretty Lizzies are especially in BIG sizes and of course i was not disappointed! .. the brilliance and the fire is just unbelievably lively .. that they even appear to be speaking to me .. LOL. It is undeniable that for Lizzies, the larger the cut, the more beautiful the stone; ie if you can take the size :)

These stones just need to be set in a simple solitaire or 3-stone ring. You can see I am very much inspired by these "UNFORGETTABLE" pieces.

For Sale ~ Beautiful Moonstone Pendant/Brooch

How do I describe this pendant/brooch ... It has LOTS OF PRESENCE! and it is up

Note that of the 5 oval cabochons, only the one (milky white) next to the star-shaped mother-of-pearl is a natural moonstone. I am not sure what the other 4 ovals are but they have very saturated colors with a great sheen.
From the pictures, you can see that the last oval is articulate, whilst the rest are fixed.

The metal is of 925 sterling silver and is well rodium plated, giving it nice white gold look. As mentioned, the stars (2 pieces) are mother-of-pearl and there is a small red garnet accent.

The piece measures 8cm.

Makes a beautiful brooch too!

It was great to hear again from Susan again, with whom I had worked before .. on a modified version of the LI-ANA.

Though a simple design, the presence of ADISSON is OUTSTANDING!! The main stone belongs to Susan and she had arranged to send it to me. The sides are diamonds of FG VVS quality .. very sparkly and full of fire! I am waiting for Susan's handshots .. and will post once i get them. Meanwhile enjoy ..

PEEKABOOHEARTS Band

Hey .. if you remember in my blog a few days ago "New Project Coming Up" i wrote abt a very unique band of tapered baguettes and light blue sapphire hearts .. well this band is completed and she loves it ! This band is designed by L who wanted a band of tapered baguettes (similar of that to BECKY) but wanted one to call her very own by adding on each side of the channelled baguettes 2 sapphires hearts. L's idea was to have the heart not so clearly visible from the top but instead lower; just about slightly lower than half eternity so that there is some sort of curiosity as to what they 'maybe' .. hence the name "PEEKABOOHEARTS" ! I really love this name as it expresses the intent of the ring design so much :) Okay less talk .. pictures and a video..

EVERYONE DESERVES A SECOND CHANCE !

I was catching up the news last evening on ChannelNewAsia, enjoying my dinner at the same time. What caught my attention was this report PRISONERS GET CREATIVE. The man behind this move is none other than PUEY QUINONES, a young but established filipino fashion designer, who has been conducting weekly workshop in a maximum security prison in the Philippines for the last one and a half year. It touched me to hear these inmates feeling a sense of hope and pride to know that thier work are appreciated outside the prison walls. I saw some of the work produced and they were really quite unique and pretty. One particular inmate could really draw directly onto a fabric piece with such ease. He was a natural ! It's good to know that there are people like Quinones who are paying back to society through this community work ... can't agree with you more that the everyone deserves a second chance. Thank you!

New Project Coming Up ..

Hi All,

I have to say this is really a very unique piece I am doing for L. It's a combination of tapered baguettes and hearts in light blue sapphire.

L wanted to use blue sapphire Hearts and the choice was either for the usual blue sapphire or the light blue sapphire. The light blue appeals to her more as they do have more sparkles :)

So here are the pictures of the combo..

L has approved the metalwork and I am keeping fingers crossed that I can take pictures of her finished project next weekend or early next week. This is going to be really 'one of a kind' .. in a very positive way however. I am excited but you can imagine how more excited L is !
